The Home Mutual Insurance Association of Carroll County, Iowa, was born out of necessity and organized for sharing, not profit. The association evolved as needs changed and has been conducting business for the past 128 years. It started in 1878 when a fire on a farm north of Manning completely destroyed all of the buildings. The man had no insurance because the large eastern insurance companies would not write insurance out on the Iowa prairie.
Three of the man's friends contacted 18 of their neighbors and a collection was taken for the purpose of rebuilding. When the project was complete there was money left over and these men started a mutual insurance company, a company which is owned by its policyholders. The first meeting was held on June 23, 1878. The company name was Der Deutchen Gegenseitigen Feur Versicherungs' Gesellschaft fur Carroll and Crawford Counties. In 1920 the name changed to Home Mutual Insurance Association of Carroll County, Iowa.
Today, HMIA property territory includes the counties of Audubon, Calhoun, Carroll, Crawford, Greene, Guthrie, Sac and Shelby in west central Iowa. We are reinusred with Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Iowa and are members of the Mutual Insurance Association of Iowa (MIAI) and National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC).
